Brewing is once again flourishing from the headwaters of the Hudson River clear down to the reaches of the Delaware Bay. Regional breweries in upstate New York -- Matt Brewing in Utica and High Falls (formerly Genesee) in Rochester -- have found a new lease of life with the craft brewing renaissance. Meanwhile, new wave breweries, such as Brooklyn Brewery, located in the once brewery-rich Williamsburg area of Brooklyn; Flying Fish in New Jersey; and the fast-growing Dogfish Head Brewery in Lewes, Delaware have 10 years under their belts. New blood is continually topping up the ranks of craft beer - Long Island's Blue Point Brewing Co., Kingston, NY's Keegan's Ales and upstate's Southern Tier, for example Brewpubs such as the Heartland chain in New York City - five locations supplied with fresh beer from a single brewing location; Southampton Publick House on Long Island; Triumph in Princeton, NJ; and Iron Hill and Stewarts in Delaware, are also well-established. New York boasts over 50 craft breweries and brewpubs; New Jersey has more than 20; and Delaware a half dozen or so. But the real proof of good beer is the choice you will find on tap and on shelves in the region's retail establishments.
